La Junta Nacional de Seguridad en el Transporte (NTSB, por sus siglas en inglés) divulgó el martes en una audiencia pública desde Washington D.C. los resultados de la investigación sobre la trágica caída del puente peatonal de la Universidad Internacional de Florida (FIU), ocurrida el 15 de marzo del 2018. En el incidente murieron 6 personas y 10 más quedaron heridas.
De acuerdo con la NTSB, la causa probable del colapso de la estructura, fueron los errores en el cálculo de la capacidad de carga del puente, por parte de la empresa FIGG Bridge Engineers Inc.
“Llevamos siglos haciendo puentes en este país, es inconcebible que algo así haya sucedido”, comentó Bruce Landsberg, vicepresidente de la NTSB.
El reporte de más de 6,000 páginas, también indica una inadecuada interventoría de parte de Louis Berger, quien falló en detectar los errores de cálculo de FIGG Engineers Inc.
En la reunión también se presentó un video que detalla paso a paso cómo fue elevado este puente, y cómo tenía grietas cada vez más evidentes.
Tras entrevistar a todos los involucrados, ahora se sabe que la mayoría conocía de las fallas. Tres semanas antes de ser instalado, un fuerte ruido en el medio de la estructura asustó tanto a los trabajadores de la construcción, que salieron corriendo.
Todos lo sabían, y sin embargo nadie pareció tener el suficiente sentido común para dar la alerta y detener cuanto antes la obra. Llegó el día de la instalación y la calle 8 solo fue cerrada temporalmente.
El documento del informe, enumera 30 razones por las que sucedió esta tragedia.
Entre las causas de la tragedia, también se responsabiliza al Departamento de Transporte de Florida, que debió proveer una mayor supervisión del proyecto, para asegurarse que todas las medidas de seguridad fuesen identificadas y ejecutadas.
También responsabiliza a FIU, y las compañías constructora e interventora, por no declarar que las grietas eran inaceptables.
