Thirty-one journalists have been murdered since AMLO became president, according to the organization Articulo 19. These were not government crimes, of course. But the impunity and the lack of protections for the work of journalists is almost total.

President López Obrador has repeatedly denied reports of conflict of interests in his family. He has tried to move attention away from the latest controversy by attacking journalists who question his government, even when the questions – about crime, his handling of the pandemic or the shortage of medicines – have nothing to do with his family or recent issues.

Seventy percent of guns recovered from crime scenes in Mexico are traced to the United States, and they contribute to Mexico’s more than 22,000 yearly gun-related homicides. The Mexican government has filed suit in a federal court in Massachusetts against some of the largest U.S. producers of firearms, including Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Beretta.

As Covid comes closer to becoming an epidemic, rather than a pandemic, the rules from state to state are getting more and more confusing. Meanwhile, Covid is still killing people.

The government of President López Obrador is on track to become the most lethal for the national news media. Some 29 journalists were murdered since he took power in December of 2018. Netzahualcóyotl Cordero miraculously escaped becoming number 30 this week in Cancun.

The U.S. embargo on Cuba emboldens the hardliners in the government who blame the United States for their own failed policies, and who are determined to hold onto power. It also hurts the Cuban people, impeding their ability to obtain basic medical supplies.

Despite the new obstacles created by Mexico's cooperation with the United States on immigration policy, the 'coyote' business is thriving due to the economic crisis sparked by the pandemic.
